Junior goalie Alex Govenettio and freshman midfielder Jeff Edwards were both honored by the MAAC on Monday after helping lead the Canisius College men’s lacrosse team to a win against Manhattan on Saturday. Govenettio collected the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Edwards was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week.

Govenettio stopped 10 shots, while allowing just four goals in the Griffs’ 9-4 victory against Manhattan on Saturday. The junior recorded six of his 10 saves in the fourth quarter to help Canisius even its conference record at 2-2 during the 2014 campaign.

The netminder has anchored the top defense in the MAAC as a junior. Govenettio currently ranks first in the conference with an 8.53 goals against average and second with a .540 save percentage. He collected MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, also earning the honor on Feb. 17.

Edwards led the Canisius offense to the win on Saturday, recording a career-best five points versus the Jaspers. The rookie netted his first collegiate hat trick and added two assists, while also keying a strong third quarter for the Griffs. Edwards recorded four points on two goals and two assists in the quarter as Canisius outscored Manhattan, 5-2 – stretching a 3-1 halftime advantage to an 8-3 lead.

During his rookie campaign, Edwards has collected 14 points, seven goals, seven assists and eight ground balls.

Govenettio, Edwards and the Griffs look to continue their winning ways in MAAC play this weekend with a conference matchup against Quinnipiac. The schools are set to meet on Saturday in Hamden, Conn. at noon.
