Senior Nick LoCoco led the Canisius attack in the victory, recording season highs with seven points, two goals and five assists. With his five helpers, LoCoco moved into second place in the program's record book with 85 career assists and is now 10 shy of the school's standard.
Senior Greg Michael posted four points in the win, netting a game-high three goals to go along with one assist. Junior Simon Giourmetakis added three points and two goals, while senior Graham Bergsma and junior Brendan O'Hagan also chipped in two scores. Senior defender Dan Coates and junior Jon Domres rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
Junior Sean Callahan registered double-digit saves for the second-straight game to anchor the Canisius defense, stopping 10 shots on the afternoon.
LoCoco led the Griffs' charge right from the start, assisting on four early goals as the Griffs took a 4-0 advantage 10 minutes into the game. Bergsma opened the scoring 1:55 into the contest, giving Canisius a lead it would not relinquish. LoCoco then connected with Michael and Giourmetakis for a 3-0 edge. Michael then finished the run with his second tally of the afternoon, scoring a man-up goal with 5:05 left in the first quarter.
The Keydets (2-9, 0-3 MAAC) responded with a 4-1 run in the final 1:44 of the first as the teams headed into the second quarter with the Griffs leading, 5-4.
Canisius reclaimed its four-goal lead in the second stanza, taking advantage of a strong defensive effort to extend its lead. The Griffs held the Keydets off the scoreboard during the quarter, while O'Hagan, Bergsma and LoCoco all netted unassisted tallies for an 8-4 halftime edge.
The Griffs continued their strong play in the third quarter, extending their lead to six goals. LoCoco fed Michael for a man-up goal early in the period and after a VMI score, LoCoco netted his second tally of the day for the five-goal lead. Domres then sent the teams into the final frame with Canisius up, 11-5, with his first goal of the 2011 season.
In fourth quarter, VMI was unable to get any closer than four goals as Canisius claimed its second conference victory of the season. The Griffs held a 35-32 advantage in shots on the afternoon and converted 3-of-4 extra-man opportunities.
Drew Leonard led the Keydets with four points on two goals and two assists, while Matt Lindemann stopped 12 shots in goal.
Canisius returns to action on Wednesday, closing out its non-conference season at home against Robert Morris. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 4 p.m.
Game Notes: LoCoco now trails only current Griffs head coach Randy Mearns for the most assists in school history ... LoCoco is the first Griff to record seven points in a game since he accomplished the feat on April 25, 2009 against VMI ... Callahan recorded double-digit saves in consecutive games for the second time during his career ... Michael now has 17 points (10g, 7a) in eight games this season, three more points than he had in his first three seasons combined (10g, 4a) ... The Griffs are now 10-4 all-time against VMI and have won eight of the last nine meetings.
