The Canisius College softball team pounded out a combined 22 runs on 26 hits Sunday as the Golden Griffins moved to 5-1 on the year with a pair of wins over St. Francis (Pa.) and North Carolina A&T on the first day of the North Carolina A&T Invitational. The Blue and Gold scored a 10-4 win over the Red Flash before coming back and posting a 12-0 victory over the host Aggies in the nightcap. Canisius has outscored its opponents by a 45-16 clip so far this season and the 5-1 record through six games is the team's best start to a season since 1994, when the Blue and Gold also went 5-1 to start the year.

Junior Jen Consaul picked up both wins on the day in the circle for the Griffs to improve her record to 3-1 on the year. Senior Amanda Baun went four frames in the first game against St. Francis, but Consaul came on in relief and earned the win in that game before giving up just two hits to go with 11 strikeouts against North Carolina A&T.

The Griffs will play St. Francis, North Carolina A&T or UMES in the North Carolina A&T Invitational championship game at 12 p.m., on Monday. The North Carolina A&T-UMES game was halted in the fourth inning on Sunday because of darkness. That game will be completed at 8:30 a.m., Monday morning.

The Golden Griffins jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning but needed five runs in the fifth take defeat St. Francis (Pa.) 10-4 in the first game of the North Carolina A&T Invitational. The Blue and Gold had 10 hits in the win, with freshman Bethany DMarco leading the way after she went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBIs. Fellow freshman Tori Nappo had two hits for the Griffs, as did senior Stephanie Pfentner and sophomore Robin Kennery. Pfentner and Kennery each scored two runs in the win, while Tori Nappo scored a run and was also credited with an RBI as well.

With Canisius already leading 2-0 in the first, DeMarco drilled a single to right that allowed two runs to score to put the team up 4-0. The Red Flash (0-3) added a single run in the second and three runs in the third to knot the game at 4-4, but Canisius took the lead for good in the fifth as the team sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame and scored five runs on five hits to make the score 9-4. Canisius added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI base hit by DeMarco.

Consaul came on in relief of starter Baun to earn the win after she tossed three shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out three and walking one. Baun got a no decision in the game after she gave up four runs, just one of which was earned, on four hits to go with five strikeouts and three walks.

Canisius scored a season-high 12 runs on a season-high 16 hits in the team's 12-0 win over North Carolina A&T. Kennery went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs, two runs scored and an RBI to lead the way for Canisius. Five players had multiple hits in the win over the Aggies (0-1), with sophomore Michelle DelPrince adding three hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
