Men's Lacrosse Hosts Hobart in Home Opener

The Canisius College men’s lacrosse team hosts in-state foe Hobart on Tuesday night in the Griffs’ first home game of the season. The game, which can be seen live on Time Warner SportsChannel, is set to begin at 7 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS
• Canisius is 2-2 to start the 2014 season, coming off a 19-6 loss at No. 15 Cornell last Tuesday.
• Junior midfielder Tim Edwards and sophomore attackman Vince Gravino lead the Griffs with nine points each. Edwards has recorded a team-best five assists with Gravino netting a team-leading six goals.
• Edwards has also led Canisius at the faceoff X, winning 67.8 percent of his faceoffs.
• The Griffs own the second-best scoring defense in the MAAC at 10.50 goals per game.
• Alex Govenettio has anchored the unit with a 9.93 goals against average and .548 save percentage.

X-FACTOR
• Junior do-it-all midfielder Tim Edwards has excelled as the Griffs’ main face-off weapon in 2014.
• Edwards is ranked second nationally in the latest NCAA rankings by winning 67.8 percent of his restarts this season (40-of-59).
• The junior has won at least 50 percent of his draws in all four games, including a 60 percent mark in three of the four contests.

EDWARDS DOES IT ALL
• Griffs fans have been used to junior Tim Edwards doing a little bit of everything for Canisius.
• In addition to winning 67.8 percent of his faceoffs this season, Edwards is tied for the team lead with nine points, while posting a team-best 29 ground balls and five assists.
• The junior also ranks 16th nationally with 7.25 ground balls per game.
• Edwards is coming off a season where he led the Griffs with 39 points, 20 goals and 19 assists. He also won 51.2 percent of his faceoffs (21-of-41) and added 28 ground balls.

GRAVINO LOOKING TO AVOID THE SOPHOMORE SLUMP
• Sophomore Vince Gravino picked up right where he left off after a strong rookie campaign.
• Gravino is tied for the team lead with nine points this season, netting a team-best six goals to go along with three assists.
• The sophomore then came out of the gate strong with five points and a career-best four goals in the season-opening win at Boston University.
• Last season, Gravino earned MAAC All-Rookie Team honors after posting 26 points and 19 goals in 12 games as a freshman. He led the Griffs with 1.58 goals per game in 2013.

CANISIUS - HOBART SERIES HISTORY
• In 14 all-time meetings between the two New York State schools, Hobart holds a 13-1 advantage against the Griffs.
• Canisius’ lone win in the series came during the 2010 season when it posted an 8-7 overtime victory in Buffalo.
• Overall, the series has been much more competitive as of late. In the last four years, Hobart has outscored Canisius by an average of 10.0-7.5. In the first 10 games of the series, the Statesmen won by an average of 18.7 to 5.8.
• Last year, Hobart outscored Canisius, 4-0, in the final 20 minutes to earn a 12-8 victory in Geneva.

ABOUT THE STATESMEN
• Hobart is still in search of its first win of the 2014 season, starting the campaign 0-5.
• The Statesmen have been in all five of their games with an average margin of defeat of just three goals (and no more than five tallies).
• Cam Stone leads Hobart with 11 points on three goals and a team-best eight assists. Jake McHenry has netted a team-leading 10 goals.
• Peter Zonino has played every minute in goal with a 10.86 goals against average and .534 save percentage.
• Jake Shapiro has led the team in faceoffs with a .405 winning percentage (32-of-79).
