Monmouth freshman pitcher Sydney Underhill threw a pair of complete games and gave up just one run in 14 innings of work as the visiting Hawks swept Canisius in MAAC softball action Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at the Demske Sports Complex. Monmouth moved to 18-18 overall and 9-7 in MAAC play by winning game one 2-0 before taking the nightcap 2-1. The Golden Griffins are now 16-28 overall and 6-10 in conference games.

Underhill improved to 15-12 on the year with the two wins. In the first game, she posted her third shutout of the season after she gave up just three hits and struck out two while allowing just one Canisius base runner to reach second base. In the second game, Underhill gave up seven hits to the Griffs and was faced with runners at first and second with two outs in the seventh before inducing a line-drive out to third to end the game and preserve the Hawks’ 2-1 victory.

Canisius senior pitcher Jen Consaul took both of the losses in the circle for the Blue and Gold, as her record moved to 15-18 on the year. Consaul, who is the school’s career leader in complete games with 83, went the distance in both contests on Sunday. She gave up two runs on six hits in the first game and then allowed two runs in the nightcap.

In the first game, Monmouth put the first run of the game on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single by sophomore catcher Jill Freese. The Hawks tacked on an insurance run in the top-half of the seventh when pinch runner Lauren Howard scored from third base on a ground-out to short by Nikki Sandelier. Freshman Jessica Berzins, junior Michelle DelPrince and senior Valorie Nappo all had base hits for Canisius in the loss.

After playing three scoreless innings to start game two, Monmouth scored twice in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead over Canisius. With one out in the fourth, Monmouth posted back-to-back hits before freshman Rachel Shotzbarger ripped a single back up the middle to drive in teammate Vanessa Cardoza to make the score 1-0. Later, Monmouth added to its lead with on a base hit to left field that allowed Justene Reyes to score from third. Canisius cut Monmouth’s lead in half at 2-1 in the home-half of the fifth on a RBI-single by junior Robin Kennery that allowed Berzins to score from second base. Underhill was able to keep the Canisius bats in check the rest of the way, as she closed out game two with five strikeouts and she ended up stranding nine Canisius base runners.

Kennery went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game two loss, while Berzins, DelPrince, Valorie Nappo, junior Meghan Cuda and sophomore Alexis Roman all added hits to the losing effort. Berzins reached base three times in the second game, as she also drew two walks.

Canisius will close out its eight-game homestand on Wednesday, April 30, when the team plays host to Colgate in a non-conference doubleheader. That will be the Griffs’ final home games of the 2014 season. Game one at the Demske Sports Complex is set to begin at 3 p.m.
