The Canisius softball team pounded out a season-high 21 hits and twice came back from a two-run deficit to record a 9-7 win over Rider in the second game of a MAAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Lawrenceville, N.J. The Golden Griffins lost the first game by a score of 5-0 and the team moved to 14-13 overall and 1-1 in MAAC play with Saturday’s results. The Broncs are now 6-27 overall and 2-2 in conference games.

Canisius led 1-0 through three innings and then took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the fourth on an RBI-double by sophomore Michelle DelPrince. The host Broncs took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth with a four-run scoring burst. After the first two batters that inning reached base safely, freshman Emily Cottrell ripped a three-run home run to left to put the Broncs up 3-2. Rider added a run to take a 4-2 hold and had the bases loaded with two outs, but Canisius reliever Corrine Schaus got out of danger by getting a line-drive out to end the inning.

Canisius retook the lead with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a RBI-base hits by senior Stephanie Pfentner, senior Katie Medina and freshman Tori Nappo. Rider charged back with three runs in the home half of the fifth to take a 7-5 lead, but the Blue and Gold’s bats were again up to the task, as the Griffs scored three times in the sixth to regain the lead at 8-7.

In the sixth, sophomore Robin Kennery drove in teammate Meghan Cuda with a base hit up the middle and Medina knocked in a pair with a double to center that allowed Kennery and freshman Alexis Roman to score. Roman added an insurance run for Canisius in the seventh with an RBI-single that pushed DelPrince across the plate. DelPrince reached earlier in the inning with a triple to center, her fourth triple of the season.

Canisius junior Jen Consaul came on in relief of Schaus in the fifth and earned the win, her 10th win in the circle this season. She did not allow a hit or a run in her 2.2 innings of work, and she fanned three and walked one. Canisius senior Amanda Baun started for the Griffs and went 3.2 innings where she allowed four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two. She went through the game’s first three innings without giving up a hit.

Six Canisius hitters had multi-hit days in the game two win, as the team tallied its season-high 21 hits in the victory. Medina went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Cuda, Roman, Kennery, and DelPrince all had three hits in the winning effort. Kennery added two RBIs to her team-leading total of 22, and Cuda scored twice to give her 21 runs scored this season. Junior Valorie Nappo also had a hit, a double, and a run scored in the win for Canisius.

In the first game, Rider snapped a seven-game losing streak to Canisius with a 5-0 win. The Griffs had just three hits in the loss, with Pfentner, Cuda and Valorie Nappo all reaching base. Consaul took the loss after she went five innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits.

After playing its first 27 games away from Buffalo, Canisius will host St. Bonaventure Tuesday, April 9, at 3 p.m., in a non-league doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
