The Canisius softball posted its first MAAC doubleheader sweep of the season on Sunday as the Golden Griffins took a pair of games from visiting Saint Peter’s on Senior Day at the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius won the first game 6-1 on the power of a complete-game by senior pitcher Amanda Baun, and then the Blue and Gold took the nightcap with a 5-2 victory, with the key hit coming off the bat of senior Stephanie Pfentner that knocked in a pair of runs. Canisius is now 21-16 overall and 6-4 in MAAC play while the Peacocks slipped to 7-36 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Baun picked up her fourth win of the season in game one after she allowed just one run, an unearned tally, while scattering six hits and fanning nine in seven innings of work. Junior Jen Consaul moved to 15-7 on the year with the win in game two, where she gave up two runs on four hits to go with six strikeouts. Canisius freshman Meghan Cuda went a combined 4-for-5 with a double, her first career home run and three runs scored in the pair of wins, while teammate Valorie Nappo went 3-for-7 with two runs scored in the winning efforts. Freshman Bethany DeMarco had two hits and drove in three RBIs for Canisius on Sunday, while sophomore Robin Kennery posted hits in both contests to extend her hitting streak to 11 games, the longest hitting streak of her career.

Game One - Canisius 6, Saint Peter's 1
Saint Peter’s got on the board first in game one on an RBI-single by catcher Sierra Parker in the top half of the first inning. Canisius scored three times in the third to take a 3-1 lead, a lead the Blue and Gold would hold throughout the contest. Cuda led that frame off with a ground-rule double. She scored on a fielder’s choice play off the bat of Kennery, and then Kennery came around to score a short time later on an RBI-base hit by DeMarco. Leading 2-1, Pfentner put Canisius up 3-1 with an RBI-double to the gap in right center that allowed DeMarco to score from second base.

Canisius tacked on three more runs in the fifth to make the score 6-1. In that scoring rally, DeMarco drove in a pair of runs with a double to right and pinch-runner Tori Nappo scored later on in that frame when sophomore Michelle DelPrince reached on a Saint Peter’s error, one of four Peacock mistakes in game one. Saint Peter’s starter Erica Colon took the loss for the Peacocks after she allowed six runs, three earned, on eight hits to go with six strikeouts and two walks.

Game Two - Canisius 5, Saint Peter's 2
In the second game, Canisius again scored three times in the home half of the third inning, highlighted by an RBI-double off the bat of Kennery and a two-run single to right by Pfentner. Saint Peter’s cut the Griffs’ lead to 3-1 with a single tally in the fourth and then the Peacocks made it a one-run game in the top of the sixth on an RBI ground-out by Fran D’Amato. Canisius quickly pushed its lead back to three runs at 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Cuda drove a ball into the corner in right field and then raced around the bases for a two-run, inside-the-park homer. Those insurance tallies were more than enough for Consaul, who despite allowing a leadoff base hit in the seventh, got a strikeout, a line-out and a ground out to end the contest.

Canisius had seven hits in the game two victory, with Cuda and Kennery each posting multi-hit games in the winning cause. Saint Peter’s starter Tori Feorenzo took the loss in the circle for the Peacocks after she allowed five runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits. She also struck out six and walked six in the contest.

The Griffs return to action Tuesday, April 23, when the team plays at cross-town Buffalo. The non-league game is set to begin at 4 p.m., at Buffalo’s Nan Harvey Field. The Bulls will return to Canisius on April 24, for what is currently scheduled to be the Griffs’ final home date of the 2013 campaign.
