A pair of early Manhattan (4-8-1, 1-3-1 MAAC) goals was too much to overcome for the Canisius College women’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Riverdale, N.Y.
The Jaspers scored goals in the eighth and 18th minutes and the Griffs were unable to recover, despite junior midfielder Maria Nelms goal in the 70th minute, ultimately falling 2-1.
The Jaspers jumped out to the early lead when Aislinn McIlvenny sent a cross to the far post, which was finished by Kaelyn Angelo. Manhattan found the back of the net again in the 18th minute off a set piece. Sam Washuk took a corner kick, which was headed in by Shannon Barry for the eventual game winner.
Canisius got one back in the 70th minute when Nelms fired a shot from 25 yards out that found the upper right corner. The goal was Nelms’ first of the season.
The Griffs managed to outshoot the Jaspers 14-13, and held the advantage in corner kicks 8-4, but couldn’t manage to tally the equalizer. Senior goalkeeper Megan Tock finished the contest with five saves.
The Griffs will now return home to play four of their final five contests at the Demske Sports Complex. First will be Marist on Wednesday, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
