JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The Canisius women’s basketball team held Saint Peter’s to 28 percent from the floor en route to defeating the Peacocks 56-43 at the Yanitelli Center on Thursday night. The Golden Griffins improve to 11-15 overall and 7-10 in the MAAC.
Junior Kayla Hoohuli led all players with 16 points while senior Jamie Ruttle had 10 points. The Griffs shot 44 percent from the floor, going over 40 percent for the 13th time this season. Canisius also held a 35-30 edge on the glass, with sophomore Tiahana Mills grabbing eight boards and freshman Lauren D’Hont pulling down a career-high six rebounds.
“We did some really good things tonight on the defensive end by forcing Saint Peter’s into tough offensive situations,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “I liked the way we did a lot of little things as a team to win this road game.”
Hoohuli led the Griffs’ offense early by scoring 11 of the first 16 points. The junior scored the final nine points of a 10-0 run to put Canisius up 14-6 just over six minutes into the game. The Griffs forced Saint Peter’s into outside shots as the Peacocks scored their first 12 points from behind the arc. Saint Peter’s closed the deficit by crashing the offensive glass with Kaydine Bent scoring eight points and grabbing four offensive boards in 10 first-half minutes. Ruttle scored six of the last eight points of the half for the Griffs, who took a 26-24 lead into the locker room.
Canisius came out strong to open the half and used a 8-2 run capped by a coast-to-coast layup by Courtney VandeBovenkamp to quickly go up 34-26. The Griffs held Saint Peter’s (3-23, 2-14 MAAC) to just one field goal in the first nine minutes of the second half as Canisius led by as many as 14 points at 43-29 with 10:47 left.
The Peacocks cut the Canisius lead to six at 47-41 with just under seven minutes left, but a 3-pointer on the wing from Hoohuli stopped the 12-4 run and put the Griffs up by nine. Saint Peter’s wouldn’t make a field goal during the final seven minutes as Canisius put the game away.
Bent led Saint Peter’s with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench. Antonia Smith had 10 points for the Peacocks who made four of their first eight 3-pointers but went 2-for-14 down the stretch.
Canisius plays its final road game of the regular season on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins play at Iona College. Tipoff in the Hynes Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.
