The Canisius College softball team dropped a pair of games to Miami (Ohio) and Western Kentucky on the first day of the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Spring Fling Tournament, hosted by Western Kentucky. The Golden Griffins lost to Miami (Ohio) 5-0 in the first game before falling to the host Hilltoppers 8-1 in the nightcap. Canisius is now 2-4 on the year.

Against Miami (Ohio), the RedHawks (3-2) scored two runs in the bottom half of the fourth and then posted three insurance runs in the sixth. That was more than enough support for Miami starter Paige Myers, who earned her third win of the season in the circle for the RedHawks after she went the distance and allowed three hits while striking out six. Canisius senior Jen Consaul took the loss for the Blue and Gold after she allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits to go with three walks and two strikeouts.

Junior Robin Kennery had one of Canisius' three hits in the loss to Miami, and that came in the form of a double with out one in the fourth. Sophomore Tori Nappo and freshman Jessica Berzins also had base hits for the Griffs in the loss.

In the second game, Canisius posted a quick 1-0 lead in the top half of the first thanks to an RBI-single by freshman Lindsey Silfer. With two outs in the top of the first, Kennery ripped her first triple of the 2014 season to center, and she scored moments later when Silfer lined a ball to the gap in right center. That was the last run Canisius would score however, as the Hilltoppers scored multiple runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to earn an 8-1 victory.

Canisius had eight hits in the loss to Western Kentucky and the Griffs ended up leaving seven runners on base. Berzins had a pair of hits in the loss, as did sophomore Alexis Roman. Western Kentucky starter Emily Rousseau eaned the win in the circle for the Hilltoppers, while Canisius freshman Sarah Andrews took the loss. Andrews allowed eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits while striking out three and walking three.

Canisius will return to action Saturday with a pair of games on the second day of the five-team event in Blowing Green, Ky. The Griffs will play Belmont at 3 p.m., before taking on Bradley at 5 p.m.
