A pair of costly Duquesne goals late rallied the Dukes past the Canisius women’s lacrosse team 12-11 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Dukes tied the game with seven seconds left in regulation on a free-position opportunity and then scored the game-winner with four seconds remaining in the first overtime. The loss dropped the Griffs to 3-4 on the season.

“When we needed our leadership most today it was nonexistent,” said head coach Scott Teeter. "Today we had a choice to make when the game was on the line and we chose to fold. We need players to step up and want the ball when the game is on the line."

In a back and forth game that saw neither team hold more than a two goal lead, the Griffs were led offensively by senior midfielder Maria Kotas who scored a career-high five goals and added an assist.

Sophomore midfielder Ashley Bull scored a career-high three goals of her own. Junior attackers Meghan Cuddy and Tori Quinn each tallied a goal as well.

The Griffs held an 11-9 lead with 12 minutes to play, but the Dukes scored the game’s final three contest – two of which were from Caitlin Prince who scored a team-high three goals for Duquesne.

Junior goaltender Kayla Scully stopped a career-high 15 shots in the game.

The Griffs will return to action on Monday, March 24, when they take on Robert Morris at the Demske Sports Complex. First draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
