Indiana State scored four runs in the top of the seventh and prevented the Canisius baseball team from complete the three-game sweep with an 8-4 win over the Golden Griffins at the Demske Sporst Complex on Sunday afternoon. Canisius is now 22-14 on the season.

Indiana State (25-12) scored two runs in the top of the first, and the Griffs answered back with productive two-out hitting for the second consecutive day. Two-out RBI singles up the middle from junior Jesse Puscheck and sophomore Brett Siddall knotted the score at 2-2. Senior Ryan Coppinger sent a grounder to shortstop, but Siddall beat the throw at second on the fielder’s choice to extend the inning. Senior Jose Torralba followed with a two-RBI single through the hole on the left side to give the Griffs a two-run lead. Canisius sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning and forced Indiana State starter Kurt Kudrecki into 41 pitches in the inning.

The Sycamores scored a run in the top of the second to make it a one-run game. In the third, Coppinger led off by beating out an infield single to shortstop but was picked off at first base. Freshman Christ Conley battled back from down 0-2 in the count to work a seven-pitch walk with two outs, and sophomore Anthony Massicci followed with a single through the left side. That single chased Kudrecki but after the first pitch from Ryan Keefaber, Conley was picked off at second base on a throw down from the catcher to end the inning.

Indiana State took control of the game in the seventh, as Derek Hannahs reached on a leadoff double to the gap in right center. After Hannahs moved to third on a groundout, Canisius brought the infield in to cut off the tying run. A chopper from Cody Zimmerman to short put Massicci off balance and his throw home was late, allowing Hannahs to tie the game and chase junior Devon Stewart (3-5). Lefty Eric Stozlenburg relieved Stewart and struggled to find the strike zone, hitting two batters and walking three to force home three runs and give the Sycamores a 7-4 lead.

Ryan Keefaber (2-1) shut down the Canisius offense by throwing 6.1 hitless innings and striking out four to pick up the win.

Massicci and Torralba each reached base twice with a hit and a walk while Puscheck and Coppinger also reached base twice with a hit and HBP. Conley reached on a walk and HBP.

Canisius is scheduled to play three mid-week games, starting with a doubleheader at the University at Buffalo on Tuesday. First pitch in Amherst, N.Y. is set for 2 p.m.

Notes: Canisius lost for the first time this season when leading after six innings and had been 14-0 previously this season… Stewart went 6.1 innings, and Canisius starting pitchers have thrown at least six innings in 14 of the last 15 games on the weekend… With a first-inning single, senior Jesse Kelso reached base for the 19th consecutive game... After scoring five or more runs in 16 of the first 25 games, the Griffs have scored five or more runs twice in the last 11 contests.
