The Canisius College women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to longtime rival Niagara (3-9-0, 2-2-0 MAAC) in Lewiston, N.Y. Wednesday evening. The loss drops the Golden Griffins to 3-9-1 overall and 1-3-0 in MAAC play.

The Purple Eagles scored the game’s lone goal in the 18th minute, when Niagara’s Danielle Kennedy headed a ball towards the Griffs net. The ball was deflected on its way though traffic in front of the net and slipped by senior goalkeeper Megan Tock, who made seven saves in the contest for the Blue and Gold, for the deciding goal.

Despite out-shooting the Purple Eagles 8-2 in the second half, the Griffs were never able to find the back of the net.

“We need to be tougher in the box,” said head coach Jim Wendling. “I didn’t think we were gritty enough or wanted it as much as Niagara did tonight. We were too soft. The referee was letting physicality go tonight and I didn’t think our forwards were tough enough.”

The Griffs will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they play at Manhattan for the final contest in the team's three-game MAAC road trip. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
