Women's Soccer Adds Two More to Class of 2018

The Canisius College women’s soccer team has added forward Savannah Jonathan and midfielder Lisa Nelson to its class of 2018 recruiting class, head coach Jim Wendling announced.

The Jonathan and Nelson commitments brings the Griffs’ recruiting class to eight after previously adding six in February.

Savannah Jonathan • 5-foot-4 Forward • Newfane High School

Jonathan played her high school soccer for Newfane High School, a four-year varsity player who scored 28 goals with 11 assists as a senior, finishing her career with 64 goals and 42 assists.  Jonathan also was named First Team All-League in 2013 and  Honorable Mention All-WNY in 2013.   Savannah was also All-League Honorable Mention in 2010 and Second Team All-League in 2012. 

“Savannah brings us another great goal scorer onto our team,” Wendling said. “She has a great shot and a nose for scoring.”

A three-sport athlete at Newfane, Jonathan played tennis and basketball in high school as well. She will be studying digital media arts at Canisius. In high school she was also a member of the merit roll and was active in volunteering for her school's Mercy Flight benefit.

Lisa Nelson • 5’7” Midfielder • Spencer-Van Etten High School
Nelson comes from Spencer-Van Etten High School in Spencer, N.Y., where she was a three-year starter on the varsity team and captain for her junior and senior seasons. This center midfielder was the league MVP in 2012 and 2013 and Fourth Team All-State in 2013. In addition, Nelson helped her team attain title of Division Champions in 2012 and 2013.
"Lisa brings another talented player on our roster for 2014," Wendling said. "She will bring much needed depth into our central midfield. Lisa has great vision of the game and has an outstanding knack for finding that open forward that can led to goals as well as scoring some goals for the center mid areas."
Lisa had 14 goals and 25 assists during her senior season and tallied 36 goals and 57 assists during her high school career. Lisa is a National honor Society Member, Scholars List member, on the High Honor Roll and earned the RIT Technology Award. She also participated in the Key Club Volunteering Program and CROP; a walk to defeat hunger. Lisa plans on be studying Biology and Pre-Med at Canisius College.

The eight Canisius recruits will join 20 returners from the 2013 Griffs for the 2014 season.
