The Canisius women’s soccer team has played three spring scrimmages in the last two weeks, coming out of the stretch with a 2-1 record over that span, bringing its spring record to 2-1-1 after opening the season with a draw against Pittsburgh.
On April 4, the Blue and Gold took on St. Bonaventure. After 58 minutes of scoreless play, the Bonnies got on the board first via a free kick after the Griffs were whistled for a foul inside the 18-yard box.
The Griffs would allow another goal less than five minutes later to give the Bonnies a 2-0 lead, which would end up being the game’s final score. Their second goal came on a cross that dipped right under the left post.
The Griffs had three solid scoring chances late, but were unable to capitalize. The loss moved them to 0-1-1 on the spring season after playing to a 0-0 draw with Pittsburgh to open the spring season.
“We need to be a have more composure the ball under-pressure and we need to score some goals! Said head coach Jim Wendling”
The team then played the North London Galaxy, a U17 club team on April 6, coming away with a 4-0 win behind a hat trick from junior forward Mallory Illsley.
“We played very well, keeping control of the game and most of the ball possession,” Wendling said of the win.
Illsley scored the first three goals of the game, with sophomore midfielder Alexis Kroese netting the final goal of the game. Junior midfielder Maria Nelms picked up two assists on the day, with sophomore defender Tara McPherson and freshman forward Sabrina Fitzgerald each chipping in an assist as well.
The Griffs then went on their second road trip of the spring season, taking on Notre Dame College April 12, and taking the contest 3-0.
Canisius managed to strike first and take a two-goal lead into halftime, with Illsley beating the center back and finding the back of the net to give the Griffs their first goal.
Sophomore forward Brittany Krause scored the Griffs’ second goal after Nelms was able to slot the ball to Illsley from the endline, where Illsley dished to Krause right next to the right post for the score.
Illsley then tallied the third and final goal in the 58th minute when she received a through ball and beat the keeper in the lower-right corner to seal the Canisius victory.
Notre Dame had won the Mountain East Conference and posted a 16-2 record in 2013 at the Division II level.
With a two game spring winning streak on the line, up next for the Griffs is the University at Buffalo on April 23rd with an 8:30 p.m. kickoff. The Griffs will then finish off their spring season with a game Saturday, April 26 at Syracuse.
