Canisius women’s soccer took on long-time rival St. Bonaventure (2-2-0) on Sunday afternoon in Olean, N.Y., and despite strong play from the Golden Griffins, the squad lost by a final score of 2-0.
Senior Brigid St. Leger got the start in goal for the Griffs and the goalkeeper made seven saves, increasing her season total to 19. Sophomore Sabrina Fitzgerald led the Blue and Gold offensively, taking four shots. Behind Fitzgerald was junior Tara McPherson who recorded two shots. The Golden Griffins took 10 shots during the game and had five corner-kicks.
Head coach Jim Wendling, saw some good things from his team throughout the game despite the loss, saying “It felt like we didn’t really come out to play in the first fifteen minutes of the game, but after that we were able to get more energy and put together a good rest of the first-half. The team really felt like we could come back after the 1-0 deficit and in the second half we had some good opportunities, including seven shots but were unable to capitalize. We really need to put a better effort forward as a team and we look forward to getting back on track as we travel to California to take on Pacific and Sacramento State.”
With the loss Canisius falls to 1-3-0 on the season. The Griffs will travel to California this week to take on Pacific (Sep. 5) and Sacramento State (Sep 7.), before returning home to take on Cleveland State on Friday, Sep. 12.
