WE WILL OVERCOME
The Golden Griffins hold an 1-8-1 record against the Niagara since 2002, including a 1-2 record under head coach Jim Wendling. The last time the Griffs were victorious over the Purple Eagles was in Wendling’s first year in 2008. In the 1-0 victory over Niagara on Nov. 1, Canisius secured a spot in the 2008 MAAC Championship as Laura Ellis scored the gamewinner in the 75th minute off an assist by then-freshman Kelly Reinwald.
WHAT A DAY
In the Golden Griffins, 3-2, victory over Loyola at the Demske Sports Complex on Oct. 7 a pair of seniors had solid performances. Senior midfielder Jenny Griffin led the Golden Griffins’ offensive attack, recording a career-high five points off a pair of goals, another career high, and an assist. Kelly Reinwald added a career-high two assists on both of Griffin’s goals to bring her career point total to 100, joining former Griff Kris Moller (1984-86) as the only players to reach the 100-point milestone in program history.
Adding a goal against Rider on Oct. 9, Reinwald brought her career-point total to 102. One point now separates Reinwald from Moller to tie the all-time mark for most career points in program history. Reinwald is currently leading the Griffs in points (26), goals (9), assists (8), and shots (50).
BATTLE OF THE BRIDGE • CANAL CUP
During the 2006-07 athletic season, Canisius College and Niagara University developed an all-sports competition, in an effort to enhance the historic rivalry between the Golden Griffins and Purple Eagles.
Points are awarded to the winner of regular-season contests, except for cross country, golf and swimming and diving, which will be determined by Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship standings (see chart below), and the results will be posted on each school’s Web site. The Canal Cup will be awarded to the victor each year.
The name of the series is in reference to the Grand Island Bridge, which each team crosses when traveling to the other’s campus. The name of the trophy is in reference to the Erie Canal, which intersects Niagara County, where Niagara is located, and Erie County, where Canisius is located.
Records indicate the two schools first met on the basketball court in 1904. Currently, Canisius and Niagara compete in baseball, men and women’s basketball, men and women’s cross country, golf, men’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse, men and women’s soccer, men and women’s swimming and diving, softball and volleyball.
