The Canisius College women's soccer team was honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for the fourth consecutive year, as the team earned the 2011 NSCAA Team Academic Award for academic excellence.
For the 2010-11 academic year, the Golden Griffins posted a team GPA of 3.34, including 13 student-athletes who achieved higher than a 3.5 GPA.
"I am impressed with the level of commitment our team shows in the classroom," said head women's soccer coach Jim Wendling. "They take their studies seriously, working hard to achieve top grades and to get their college degree."
This season, the Golden Griffins received numerous accolades for their performance on the field and in the classroom. A total of seven student-athletes were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team, including seniors Christina Franceschi, Dina Gabrielli, Caroline Robert, and Kelly Reinwald, juniors Emily Paquette and Keily Funk, and sophomore Katie Griffin.
In addition, Reinwald was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team and Capital One Academic All-America District One First Team for the second consecutive season.
In order to be eligible for the award, the team must post a GPA higher than 3.0 for a full academic year.
