The Canisius College women's soccer team will open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action this weekend at the Demske Sports Complex, as they host Marist and Siena. The Golden Griffins will first welcome reigning MAAC Champion Marist to the home pitch on Friday evening at 7 p.m. After Friday's conference homeopener, the Griffs will face Siena on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

This past weekend, the Griffs were swept in their final non-conference tuneups versus Bucknell and Little Three rival St. Bonaventure. On Sept. 21 versus host Bucknell, the Griffs were handed their sixth shutout of the season. The Griffs fell to the Bison by the score of 5-0 at Emmitt Field. Bison forward Chelsea Garkowski scored a natural hat trick to give her team a 3-0 lead in the opening period. Junior goalkeeper Megan Tock recorded 11 saves in the loss, one short of tying her career game-high.

After spending close to three weeks on the road, the Griffs returned home on Sept. 23 when they hosted St. Bonaventure. The Griffs dominated play from the opening kickoff, scoring the contest's opening goal in the first three minutes of the contest. The Griffs would ride the lone goal of the first half into intermission. Exchanging goals in the 52nd and 64th minutes, the Griffs held a 2-1 lead until the Bonnies tallied a pair of goals to seal the 4-3 comeback win.

Posting a 2-8-0 overall mark in non-conference action, the Golden Griffins open MAAC play this weekend against conference opponents Marist and Siena at the Demske Sports Complex. The last time the Griffs opened conference play at home was in 2009 on the weekend of Sept. 25 when the Griffs faced Rider and Loyola, respectively. The Griffs went on to split the weekend, defeating the Broncs by the score of 3-1 on Friday night before dropping Sunday’s contest to the Greyhounds, 2-1.

In conference openers, head coach Jim Wendling is undefeated on the home pitch with a pair of wins over Rider in 2009 and Marist on Oct. 3, 2008 by the score of 3-0. Wendling remains unbeaten in conference openers with a 4-0-0 record.
