The Canisius College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Marist in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference homeopener at the Demske Sports Complex on Friday evening. After a solid effort in the opening period against the reigning MAAC Champion Red Foxes, the Golden Griffins were held to one shot in the second half.

Hosting the top-ranked team in shots and goals in the MAAC, the Griffs (2-9-0, 0-1-0 MAAC) and Red Foxes (7-5-0, 1-0-0 MAAC) played to a scoreless first half with the visitors holding a 12-7 shot advantage.

At the start of the second half, Marist took control of the contest. Placing pressure on the Griffs' end for most of the second half, Marist managed to ring a pair of chances off the crossbar before scoring the first goal of the contest.

In the 56th minute of play, Marist capitalized on a corner kick from the right flag. With the teams battling for position, midfielder Rycke Guiney dropped the ball into a crowd of players with back Marissa Mertens heading the ball in from 10 yards out to give Marist the 1-0 advantage and eventual gamewinning goal.

Marist controlled play in the second half, holding an 8-1 shot advantage over the Griffs.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Tock recorded seven saves in the loss. One of Tock's biggest saves of the evening came with three minutes remaining in the opening half to keep the game tied at zero, robbing the Red Foxes of a header from eight yards out.

Red Foxes' goalkeeper Andrea Wicks collected her fifth win of the season off 5 saves.

The Blue and Gold return to action on Sunday afternoon, as they host Siena at 1 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
