Looking to bounce back from a loss in their conference home opener, the Canisius College women's soccer team was outpowered by visiting Siena, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The Saints improve to 1-1-0 in MAAC play and 5-6-0 on the season, while the Golden Griffins drop to 0-2-0 and 2-10-0.

Sophomore Megan Mahoney had a career day, setting a career game-high with five points in the contest. Mahoney played a part in each of the Griffs' scores, tallying the team's first two goals before assisting on the third score. Mahoney would also set a career game-high in shots (5) and shots on goal (4).

Siena held a 20-17 shot advantage over the Golden Griffins in the contest. The Griffs showed their offensive capabilities in the second half despite the loss, outshooting the Saints, 10-8.

In the opening 12 minutes of the contest, the Griffs fell behind 2-0 with a pair of goals by Saints' forward Caitlin Cahalan. Each of Cahalan's goals would be deflected in off a Griffs' back, including her second goal off a free kick.

Trailing by two, Mahoney answered back with her own pair of goals, erasing the Saints' lead. Mahoney's first tally came in the 26th minute to cut the Saints' lead to 2-1. Fed a pass inside the goal box from sophomore Mallory Illsley, the junior buried the goal under the crossbar for her second of the season.

Four minutes later, Mahoney would strike again on her own in the 30th minute. Locating a loose ball, the Poughkeepsie, N.Y., native worked her way to the front of the net. From eight yards out, she blasted a hard shot at the net with Siena goalkeeper Taylor Booth stopping the intial shot before the ball trickled in behind her to tie the game at 2-2.

The Saints recaptured the lead in the 34th minute, as current point leader Brittany Pfaff connected with Taylor D'Alfonso to take a 3-2 lead.

In the second half, the Saints' Anna Grant added a goal in the 72nd minute off a free kick to take the two-goal lead at 4-2.

The Griffs answered back in the 77th minute, as Mahoney recorded her fifth point of the day on an assist. Working along the right side of the field, Mahoney sent a through ball over to senior Brooke Bandazian in the middle of the 18-yard box with Bandazian sending the one-timer into the net for her second goal of the season.

The Saints sealed the victory with their last tally of the contest in the 79th minute. Pfaff recorded her third point of the day with the unassisted goal.

Booth recorded her fifth victory of the season with four saves. Canisius goalkeeper Megan Tock made four saves in the loss.

After opening conference play at home, the Blue and Gold will travel to Iona on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Notes: The last time the Griffs and a MAAC opponent combined to score eight goals in a conference matchup was on Oct. 14, 2007 versus Saint Peter's in a 7-1 victory for the Griffs... The Griffs' losses to both Marist and Siena marks the first time they have opened MAAC play with an 0-2 record since the 2004 season... This was Mahoney's first multi-point game in her career.
