The Canisius College women's soccer team announces its spring schedule. The Golden Griffins schedule is composed of seven contests with four contests on the road and a pair of contests at the Demske Sports Complex, including an alumni game.
The Griffs opened their spring competition playing against the Western New York Flash of the Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPSL) ELite on March. Despite the outcome of a 3-0 loss to the reigining 2012 WPSL-Elite champions, Canisius head coach Jim Wendling was impressed with the team's overall play.
“We played very well against a professional team. Both our effort and work rate were tremendous,” said Wendling. "We stayed organized and defended very well with a few opportunities on goal. Considering the WNY Flash beat Penn State, 7-0, and Ohio State, 4-0, our result showed us that if we work hard enough, we can compete with some very top soccer programs. We just need to have the competitive drive and work rate in every game.”
On April 13, the Golden Griffins return to collegiate action at BIG EAST opponent Syracuse University at 1 p.m. Last spring, the Griffs fell to the Orange by a total of 3-0 after three complete 30-minute periods. In 2012, Syracuse advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament for the second straight season after posting a fall record of 9-7-2. In scrimmage action, Canisius holds an overall record of 1-3-1 against the Orange.
Remaining on the road, the Golden Griffins travel to Colgate on April 20 followed by a trip to Edinboro on April 21. The Griffs have split two recent games versus Colgate during coach Wendling’s tenure with a 2-1 overtime win at the Demske Sports Complex and 3-2 loss on the road in 2011. Posting an 11-6-4 overall record, Colgate captured the 2012 Patriot League title to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Sunday's meeting with Edinboro will mark the first between the two squads. Ranking as high as 12th in the NCAA Division II National Polls, the Fighting Scots recorded a 13-4-2 record to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
After contests on the road, the Griffs return to the Demske Sports Complex to host crosstown opponent Daemen College. The Wildcats had one of their most successful fall seasons in school history with an 11-9-0 record, winning the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship. In the fall of 2012, the Wildcats began their transition to NCAA Division II.
The Golden Griffs conclude their spring schedule with the annual alumni game on May 4, giving former Griffs an opportunity to hit the turf at the Demske Sports Complex.
