Women’s Soccer Opens MAAC Play

The Canisius College women’s soccer team will open MAAC play Saturday in New Rochelle, N.Y. The Griffs are traveling to Iona for the first of its 10 conference games.

Balanced Attack

• Five different players recorded a point in Canisius’ last two games, with all four goals being scored different Griffs.
• Freshman midfielder Sabrina Fitzgerald, junior forward Mallory Illsley and sophomore forward Brittany Krause found the back of the net in the Griffs’ 3-0 win over Albany on Friday, Sept. 13.
Brianna Smith scored in Canisius 2-1 loss against Akron.

Opening Day Success

• Canisius head coach Jim Wendling is 4-1 in conference openers since he took over the helm in 2008.
• The Griffs have outscored their opponents 11-5 in Wendling’s five previous MAAC openers.

Milestone Watch

• Brianna Smith is just one goal shy of tying Kelly Reinwald for second on the Griffs’ All-Time Goal Scoring list.
• Reinwald tallied 36 goals in her tenure.
• Smith has six goals this season.

Scouting the Gaels

• Iona currently sits at 1-5-2.
• Nicole Paulucci leads the Gaels in scoring, tallying two goals and one assist.
• Trista Rivera has played every minute in net for the Gaels, allowing 12 goals in eight games, while posting a 1.42 GAA and a .765 save percentage.

Series History

• This is the 26th meeting between the two schools.
• Canisius has played only three schools more in program history, St. Bonaventure (29), Buffalo (38) and Niagara (39).
• The Griffs have an 11-11-3 record against the Gaels.
• The teams last met on Oct. 5, 2012, with Iona taking the victory 2-1.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.
