Oxford, Ohio – The Canisius College hockey team lost to sixth-ranked Miami on Friday night, 3-0. The loss drops the Griffs to 1-3-0 on the season, while the nationally-ranked RedHawks improve to 4-2-1.

“We played the way we wanted to play in the first period but couldn’t find that early goal that could have turned the momentum our way,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We played hard the entire game but a couple unfortunate bounces didn’t go our way. If we can sustain the way we played for the first, it gives us a great chance to win in the future.”

Making his second start of the season, junior Keegan Asmundson recorded a career-best 37 saves to anchor the Canisius defense.

The RedHawks took the lead with 3:52 remaining in the opening period when Alex Wideman found the back of the net on the power play to give Miami the early advantage. Wideman would then extend the RedHawk advantage to two with 12:12 remaining in the second. A Canisius defender broke his stick on a one-timer and Wideman would finish an odd-man rush on the other end for the 2-0 lead.

Miami extended its lead 7:48 into the third period. The puck bounced off the glass behind Asmundson and fell right to an open Blake Coleman, who buried his sixth goal of the season for the 3-0 lead. Coleman’s tally would prove to be the game’s final goal as Miami recorded the 3-0 shutout victory.

The RedHawks finished the game with a 40-20 advantage in shots. Miami was also 1-for-3 on the power play, while killing all three Canisius extra-man chances.

Ryan McKay stopped all 20 shots on goal to earn the shutout victory for Miami.

The schools wrap up the two-game series tomorrow night with game time in Oxford slated for 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Miami’s first-period goal marked the first time this season that the Griffs did not score the game’s first tally … Senior Kyle Gibbons had his career-long 13-game point streak snapped … In five meetings with Miami, Canisius has only scored three goals … Canisius failed to score a power-play goal for the first time this season.
