The Canisius women’s basketball team shot 34 percent from the floor, including 3-for-17 from behind the arc, and Manhattan forced 21 turnovers as the Golden Griffins lost 52-44 to the Jaspers in the Koessler Athletic Center on Thursday night.

Junior Kayla Hoohuli led Canisius with 11 points, her eighth time in double figures in the last 11 games. Senior Jamie Ruttle added nine points while sophomore Emily Weber had eight points in 14 minutes off the bench.

“We continue to commit too many turnovers and let the defense force us into making poor decisions,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We attacked Manhattan's zone well early but couldn’t get shots to fall. I thought we got tentative after that happened and never regained the intensity until the deficit was too much."

Both teams started slow offensively with a 3-pointer from Monica Roeder extending the Manhattan lead to 12-6 just over eight minutes into the game. The Griffs would use a 9-3 run to tie the game at 15-15, including a 3-pointer from Weber and layup from Hoohuli. Canisius couldn’t claim the lead as Manhattan scored nine of the final 13 points to take a 24-19 lead in the locker room.

The Jaspers held the Griffs to one field goal in the opening 10 minutes of the second half while Manhattan made eight of its first 12 shots to take control of the game. The Jaspers led by as many as 20 points in the second half, going up 45-25 with just over eight minutes left. Canisius scored 15 of the final 19 points during the final five-plus minutes but never seriously threatened.

Three players for Manhattan (7-17, 6-9 MAAC) scored in double figures with Shayna Ericksen scoring a game-high 13 points. Allison Skrec was credited with 10 assists on the night for the Jaspers.

Notes: Canisius lost to Manhattan for the eighth time in the last nine games… Hoohuli has now made a 3-pointer in a league-high 23 of 24 games this season… Weber played for the first time since Dec. 16, against Vermont…  Skrec is the first Canisius opponent to record 10 assists in a game since Tahnee Balerio of Missouri State on Dec. 21, 2007… Redshirt junior Courtney VandeBovenkamp had five rebounds for the sixth time in the last eight games.
