Women's Soccer Adds Six for 2014

The Canisius College women’s soccer team has added six for 2014, head coach Jim Wendling announced.

The Griffs’ recruiting class hails from three different states (New York, Maryland and Illinois) and features athletes at every position.

The class of 2018 features forward Samantha Gagliano (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon), forward Taylor Kugler (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), defender/forward Becca Lederman (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur), defender Julia Mullican (Frederick Md./Oakdale), goaltender Kaylee Price (Antioch, Ill./Antioch), and forward Tia Saunders (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park).

SAMANTHA GAGLIANO • Palmyra, NY • 5-foot-5 • Forward

Samantha Gagliano joins the Griffs from Palmyra-Macedon High School near Rochester, NY. Gagliano has the ability to play either as a forward or outside midfielder. Wendling feels that her speed, quickness, technical ball skills and great goal soring ability should be an immediate impact to the Griffs.

She was the Conference Player of the Year in 2013 with her 34 goals.  Gagliano also set a new school record at Palmyra-Macedan Red Raiders High School with 87 career goals. In addition, she totaled 23 career assists. She was also Second Team All State in 2013, Fourth Team All State in 2012, All Greater Rochester Team in both 2012 & 2013 as well as Second Team All-League in 2009 and First Team All-League from 2010-2013.

Samantha also is Vice President of Student council and a member of the National Honor Society, and comes from a very athletic family as her mother and father both played college athletics and sister Sydney plays on the high school varsity soccer team.

“Sam’s great speed and goal scoring ability can make an immediate impact with the Griffs Soccer Squad,” Wendling said. “With us graduating three seniors whom scored a total of 14 goals (56-percent of the team total of last fall), Sam can be that great attacking player we need in 2014 to get us back into the top of the MAAC conference’s team scoring column."

TAYLOR KUGLER • Massapequa Park, NY • 5-foot-3 • Forward.

Taylor comes to Canisius from Long Island area of New York, who Wendling feels is  another top attacking player that will boost the goal scoring capabilities for the Griffs next fall.

She play high school soccer at Massapequa High School where she helped lead the Chiefs to two New York State High School Soccer Championships during her freshmen and senior years as well as going undefeated during her senior season.

Kugler played mostly outside midfielder/winger and scored the winning goal in the State Championship game during that freshmen year and scoring a goal during her Senior State Semi-Final Championship game.

A four-year letter winner at Massapequa High School, Taylor earned Nassau County All-Class honors while scoring nine goals with three assists during her senior Year as a right midfielder. Taylor completed her high school career with 22 career goals and 10 career assists.

She also plays club soccer for the East Meadow ECNL team, which plays in the top tier of girls club soccer. She has won two Eastern NY Club State Championships and a Region I Championship.  Taylor has been a member of the ENYYSA State Team for 5 years, played in numerous regional tournaments such as Coral Springs Boca Invitational and the Costa Rica Region I Team. Taylor also participated in the U15 National Pool Training in Oregon Training Camp.  

Her Club is currently nationally ranked No. 26 in the nation.  Taylor also comes from a long line of great athletes in her family as four of her cousins have played at the Division-I college soccer level with three playing professional soccer.  Taylor is active in Project Science Club, Walk for a Cure, Senior Nation and Foreign Language Club.  She enjoys cross fit, movies and hanging out with friends.

 “Taylor brings a wealth of top level high school and club soccer that should transfer very well into the college DI soccer competition,” Wendling said. “Taylor knows what it takes to be a champion! She has also trained and played against some of the best club players with her ECNL team. Her Tactical awareness, technical skills and goal scoring ability will truly be a great help next fall for the Griffs!”

REBECCA LEDERMAN • Berlin, MD • 5-foot-7 • Defender/Forward

Rebecca comes to Canisius from the Assateague Island National Seashore region of Maryland. Becca was a four-year letter winner both from her soccer and track teams at Stephen Decatur High School where she won numerous awards in each.

She has been both her high school soccer teams Defensive Offensive Player of the Year 2011 and Offensive Player of the Year in 2013, and also served as a two-time Team Captain.

Lederman was named First Team All Bayside in both 2012 and 2013 and Second Team All-Bayside in 2011. She has received weekly honors in the Bayside Daily Times three times in 2013 and Salisbury Daily Times four times.

Rebecca scored 25 goals as a senior along with 8 assists with a career total of 35 goals and 20 assists.  She was the second-leading goal scorer in her Bayside Conference.

She also participated in ODP for two years while being named captain of her ODP Teams. As a track athlete, Becca has qualified for the State Championships at 100-meters, and placed fourth in the Region in the 400-meters. Her time of 12.83 in the 100-meter dash is second all time at Stephen Decatur H.S. 

Rebecca is also a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Student, Principals List, 4-year member of the Biomedical Program and Academically in the top 5-percent of her high school class.

Rebecca has also been active in volunteer work with Special Olympics, Peer Mentoring, Tutoring, Fire Department and working as an intern with the Psychiatric Nursing Unit at her local hospital.

Rebecca also enjoys drawing, writing poetry and hanging out with friends. Rebecca will be in the Honors Program at Canisius majoring in Psychology

“Rebecca is a very speedy defender or forward who can make an immediate impact to our team as a freshmen,” Wendling said. “I originally recruited Becca as a defender, but she had a great fall high school soccer season as a forward with her 25 goals. I can’t wait to see her step on the field for the Griffs!"

JULIA MULLICAN • Frederick, Md. • 5-foot-9 • Central Defender/Defensive Midfielder

Julia comes to the Griffs from New Market, Maryland, just west of Baltimore. She is a two-time State Champion like incoming freshmen teammate Taylor Kugler. Julia has been a starting defender and four-year letterwinner at Oakdale High School whom also has been a part of 42 shutouts in her high school career.

Mullican had the game winning assist this past fall in the State Championship game.  During her senior year as a central defender, Julia had 4 goals along with that one assist.  Julia also had an assist in the Maryland Senior All-Star Game.

She plays on the highly ranked Baltimore Bays Chelsea Club and will be studying in the Honors Program with freshmen teammate Rebecca Lederman and majoring in Biology.

Mullican is a member of the National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society and National Art Honor Society.  She is a nominee for Regional Academic All-American Award.       

“Julia is an outstanding Central Defender whom also can play a great role as a Central Defensive Midfielder,” Wendling said. “She can also score goals off corner kicks plays with her great ability to head the ball.  Having played with an outstanding high-level club team and two-time state champion, Julia knows what it takes to be a winner.“

KAYLEE PRICE • Antioch, Illinois • 5-foot-5 • Goalkeeper

Kaylee plays for the Eclipse ECNL Club team out of Chicago, Ill, which is currently the No. 19 ranked club team in the nation.

Wendling feels that although Price is not the biggest net minder, she is lightening quick, strong hands, great diving ability, very strong punts and goal-kicks as well as fearless coming off her goal line to stuff out breakaways.  

Price was a high school All-Conference, All-Region and Lakes All-Tournament member.

Price only played one year of high school soccer at Antioch as she then played year round for the Eclipse ECNL team, which squares off with some of the best teams in the nation.

“I am very excited to have a keeper of Kaylee’s experience, training, and high level club experience join our soccer team,” Wendling said. “Kaylee is dynamite in Goal. She has great hands, strong punts and can dive to save about any shot.”

 TIARA SAUNDERS • Orchard Park, NY • 5-foot-8 • Forward/Defender

Tia is a local product from the Buffalo, NY area, who played club soccer for Alliance FC and the Buffalo Soccer Academy (BSA) coached by local soccer retired Professional Soccer Player Rudy Pikuzinksi. BSA was the No. 3 ranked club in Western New York.

Her combination of athleticism, quickness, speed and size is that attracted Coach Wendling’s recruitment of Tia. He also feels as though she has excellent technical ball skills and a high soccer IQ.

She can play multiple positions on the soccer pitch. She plays forward at the club soccer level, center back at the high school level and coach Wendling believes she could be an outstanding center midfielder.

Saunders was one of the best soccer players in the Buffalo area this past year until she tore her ACL in September. While at Orchard Park High School, Tia’s Quaker team won the Section IV Class A Championship and the ECIC Division Championship.

She also captained her Alliance FC Club team to a 2011 National Cup XI Northeast Regional Championships and advance to the National Cup Finals.

Tia’s community service involvement includes Assist with Friends Dinners, Tree & Shrub Conservation Program and Religious Education Assistant. She has three siblings Ricky (23), Brittany (22) and Stephanie (14) and her cousin (Dillow Malke) plays soccer at Long Island University.

“Tiara is everything a coach is looking for in a soccer player with her speed, quickness, athleticism and ball skills,” Wendling said. “I certainly see Tiara stepping right into our team right down the spine of our team either as a forward, center midfield or center defender.”
