The Canisius College women’s soccer team opened its spring schedule this weekend at Pittsburgh, where it played to a 0-0 draw with the Panthers.

The Griffs strong defensive performance was highlighted by the play of all three goalkeepers, junior Brigid St. Leger, sophomore Kailee DeFranks and freshman Allison Maynard.

“I was very happy with our performance against an ACC opponent as good as Pittsburgh,” said head coach Jim Wendling. “We need to continue to show improvement in all areas, but the girls really put in a strong effort and work rate during the entire 90 minutes and we got excellent play off the bench as well. I’m excited to see what we do over our next four spring games.”

The Canisius back line held strong all game with sophomore Brittany Bowen, and freshman Callie Good getting time at center back, freshman Bailey Jordan on the left and junior Jenny Piaggione at right back, keeping the Panthers off the scoreboard.

The Griffs’ best chance came early in the game when junior forward Mallory Illsley cut behind the Pittsburgh back line and got a shot off that went just wide of the upper right corner. Canisius had a few other opportunities, but failed to capitalize.

The Blue and Gold will now host a pair of spring games this weekend, kicking things off on Friday against St. Bonaventure, with game time set for 7 p.m.
