Senior midfielder Maria Kotas set a new Canisius single-game record of 14 points (eight goals and six assists) and tied the single-game goals record in Canisius’ 23-15 win over Quinnipiac (1-9, 1-1 MAAC) on Sunday.

Kotas’ 14 points ties for fourth in NCAA Division I history and is the most points scored by anyone since 2007. The total also ties the MAAC record for points in a game.

The Lancaster, N.Y. native also picked up a game-high five ground balls and tied for the team lead with two caused turnovers.

“Maria Kotas was awesome today,” said head coach Scott Teeter. “She stepped up when we needed it most and her performance really ignited our other top players as well.”

In addition to Kotas, Canisius got multi-goal games out of four other players, with the each starting attacker – juniors Tori Quinn, Meghan Cuddy and sophomore Taylor Giglio – scoring four goals for the Griffs. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Bull netted three goals as well to round out the Canisius scoring.

Kotas did most of her goal scoring in the first half, racking up five of Canisius’ nine goals at the break to give the Griffs a two-goal advantage.

The Griffs then broke out for 14 second half goals to put the game away, with the help of a 5-0 run which took a 12-11 advantage to a six goal lead at the midway point of the second.

The Blue and Gold was able to get the second half advantage in part due to controlling the draws. The Griffs held a 15-8 advantage in restarts in the second half after leading in the category 9-8 in the first half.

The Griffs also went 14-of-15 on clears in the contest.

Canisius moves to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in MAAC play this season, and will take on Siena (3-8, 1-1 MAAC) in Loudonville, N.Y. on Wednesday. First draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
