The Canisius College synchronized swimming team will begin competition at the U.S. Collegiate Nationals on Wednesday – a meet the Griffs finished fourth in last year.
Canisius is coming off its 17th straight ECAC Championship after taking the top spot in the event three weeks ago.
The Griffs swept all categories of the meet, led in the team routine, where the entire roster contributed to a five-point victory. Canisius saw 18 of its points come from the team routine, with seniors Svetlana Ponkratova, Jessica Mancini, Morgan Lebrecht, Deanna DeSimone and Viktoria Mironova as well as sophomores Laina Gray, Kristin Oswald and Laura Schmidt swimming to a score of 83.68.
The Griffs also took the top-two spots in the trio routine, with Ponkratova, Schmidt and Gray scoring 81.98, and Mancini, Lebrecht and DeSimone closely behind at 76.76.
In the duet, Gray and Mancini cruised to a victory with a score of 81.90, 8.54 points ahead of second-place Wheaton.
Ponkratova won the solo routine once again for the Griffs, scoring 82.00, topping Schmidt (77.08).
In last season’s fourth place finish, two Griffs earned individual medals, with Schmidt capturing gold in ‘C’ elements and Ponkratova earning bronze in ‘A’ elements. Ponkratova also took fourth in the solo routine.
Action is scheduled to get underway Wednesday and run through Saturday in Oxford, Ohio.
