A sloppy first half put the Canisius College women's lacrosse team in an early hole that it couldn't recover from in a 13-3 loss at Louisville in the season opener.

"While it wasn't the result we were looking for, it was good to see where we're at and what we need to work on to be successful," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "We have nowhere to go but up. We now have two weeks before we return to action and we need to get to work and fix a couple elements of our game with a good team coming to our place."

Three different Griffs scored on the afternoon in seniors Meghan McGunigle and Lindsey Morgan plus junior Maria Kotas.

Louisville started the contest strong, netting the game's opening five goals as Canisius struggled to find its rhythm. The Griffs were forced into seven turnovers with only four shots as the Cardinals built the early five-goal advantage. Kotas finally got Canisius on the scoreboard with 14:47 remaining in the half only to see Louisville add five more tallies before the intermission for the 10-1 lead.

The Griffs picked up their defensive pressure in the second stanza, anchored by the performance of sophomore netminder Kayla Scully. The goaltender recorded nine second-half stops in her first action of the season. Overall, Canisius limited the Cardinals to three goals in the second 30 minutes of action, while the Griffs added two tallies for the 13-3 final.

Louisville finished the contest with a 32-18 advantage in shots and a 13-5 edge in draw controls. Canisius was also forced into 21 turnovers on the day and was just 10-of-19 on clears.

Kaylin Morissette led the Cardinals with four goals, while Ashley Herbst recorded seven saves in a winning effort.

Freshman Claudia Coleates started the contest in goal for the Griffs, recording five saves in her first collegiate appearance before giving way to Scullly.

Canisius returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 23, hosting Cornell in its home opener. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 2 p.m.

Game Notes: The schools were meeting for the first time in lacrosse ... Coleates is the first Griff goaltender to start her first game since current assistant coach Allison Daley in 2008 ... Senior Morgan Leonard led the Griffs with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Leonard ranked seventh nationally last season with 2.11 caused turnovers per game.
