EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Canisius College women’s basketball team lost 102-54 at No. 19/20 Michigan State in the Breslin Center on Thursday night. The Golden Griffins fall to 1-1 on the season.
Senior Jen Morabito and sophomore Emily Weber each scored 12 points and both made four 3-pointers in the contest as Canisius made 11 3-pointers for the second consecutive game. Freshman Lauren D’Hont had 11 points while freshman Tamara Miskovic had four assists in 17 minutes off the bench.
“I wasn’t happy with our energy and compete level in the first half. Michigan State is obviously a very good team but we let them do whatever they wanted and dominate the glass early in the game,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We made some adjustments and found more success in the second half. We will learn from this and continue to develop as a team.”
Morabito drained a couple of 3-pointers early in the game to make it 8-6 five minutes into the contest. The Spartans then created separation with nine straight points and then broke the game open with runs of 17-4 and 17-3. Michigan State used a combination of second-chance points, 3-point shots and driving to the basket in transition to take control of the game.
Michigan State (1-1) extended the lead to 45 points early in the second half before Canisius used a 10-1 run to stop the momentum. Miskovic drove down the lane and found Weber in the corner for back-to-back 3-pointers. The Spartans went on a 16-point run later in the half and led by as many as 51 points.
Five Spartans reached double-digits, led by 19 points from Aerial Powers. Tori Jankoska had 17 points while Branndais Agee had 14 points and eight rebounds. Michigan State shot 63.8 percent from the floor and was 12-for-23 on 3-pointers. The Sprtans held a 45-21 advantage on the glass.
Canisius wraps up its trip to the state of Michigan on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins play at Oakland University. Tipoff in Rochester, Mich. is set for 8 p.m.
