The Canisius College indoor track teams combined to set four school records at the MAAC Championships on Friday night and recorded five top-five finishes.

The distance medley relay team of sophomores Michael Anvelt, Cooper Roach and Travis Jordon, and freshman A.J. Stuver provided the Griffs’ highest finish in the meet, placing second. The four completed the event in a time of 10:12.78, which broke the school record that was set earlier in the year by more than 11 seconds.

Canisius started the meet off with a new record from freshman Jeff Antolos in the 5,000-meter run. Antolos broke his own record from two weeks ago by over 15 seconds, finishing in 15:02.20, which was good for fifth place. Sophomore Chad Maloy also competed in the event, taking ninth (15:14.13).

The Griffs then saw a record-breaking performance from Roach just two events later when he finished the mile in 4:10.47, breaking Chris Kane’s record from 1990. Roach finished fourth in the event.

Freshman Brennan Root turned in a top-10 performance on the evening as well, placing seventh in the men’s 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:43.70.

On the women’s side, Canisius was led individually by senior Catherine Phillips, who finished fifth in the 3,000 (10:13.70).

The women also set a new school mark in the distance medley relay, with the team of freshman Haley Keene, juniors Brandi Pettit and Jamie Wallace, and Phillips finishing in 12:38.83, which was good for fourth.

It was Canisius’ first time competing at the MAAC Championships since 2003 after the program was added again this winter. The men finished sixth of seven even without any sprinters or throwers, tallying 21 points. The women scored 10 points in an eighth-place finish.

Monmouth took both the men’s (169) and women’s (215.5) titles handily, winning the men’s title by 59 points over second place Manhattan, and the women’s championship by 121.5 points over second place Rider.
