The Canisius College women’s soccer team fell to Iona 1-0 in its MAAC opener on Saturday in New Rochelle, N.Y.
After a scoreless first half, the Gaels (2-5-2, 1-0-0 MAAC) got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute. Iona forward Safi Ayinde found her way into the left side of the box and beat senior goalkeeper Megan Tock near side from six yards out.
The goal was Tock’s only blemish, stopping the other four shots she faced. The Griffs (2-7-1, 0-1-0 MAAC) managed to put seven shots on Gaels goalkeeper Trista Rivera, but were unable to get on the scoreboard.
Sophomore for Brittany Krause and Senior forward Brianna Smith each had two shots on goal for Canisius, who out-shot the Gaels 6-4 in the second half.
The Griffs will now return home for their next contest, taking on Rider on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Kickoff at the Demske Sports Complex will take place at 4 p.m.
