West Point, N.Y. – The Canisius College hockey team had its five-game unbeaten streak in conference play snapped with a 2-0 loss at Army. The loss drops the Griffs to 5-8-1 and 4-4-1 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Black Knights improve to 3-11-0 and 3-8-0 against league foes.

“As difficult as the game was to play in, our power play had three opportunities in the third period and were unable to get the equalizing tally,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith.

Junior Keegan Asmundson recorded 29 saves in net for the Griffs.

After a scoreless first period, the Black Knights found the back of the net midway through the second frame when Shane Hearn finished a rush for a 1-0 lead and the only goal that Army would need.

Canisius’ best opportunity on the night came when senior Ryan Bohrer had a breakaway with 13 minutes remaining only to be denied by the Army goaltender. The Griffs were also unable to score in three third-period power-play chances, firing three shots on goal in the man-up opportunities.

The Black Knights then sealed the victory when Hearn scored an empty-net goal with 57.5 seconds remaining.

Army finished the game with a 31-15 advantage in shots on the night with neither team converting on the power play. Canisius was 0-for-3 with the extra-man advantage, while killing all five Black Knight power plays.

Canisius is off until Dec. 28 when it travels to Vermont for the Catamount Cup. The Griffs open the invitational with UMass Lowell with game time slated for 4:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Canisius has averaged just 1.60 goals per game with Asmundson in net, compared to 3.11 goals per game with senior Tony Capobianco between the pipes … The Griffs have allowed just one power-play goal in their last 34 man-down situations … The 15 shots on goal were the fewest by Canisius this season (previous low was 20).
