The Canisius women’s soccer team (1-2-0) got its first win of the season on Wednesday night, as the Golden Griffins defeated the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks, 1-0 in a thrilling double overtime game at the Demske Sports Complex.
Sophomore Kathleen Lawver scored the game-winner in the second overtime on an assist from senior Jenny Piaggione. Lawver was able to take a crossing feed from Piaggione in the box and kicked the ball past Roberts Wesleyan goalkeeper Marissa Sell.
Canisius out shot the Redhawks by a final tally of 34–4, limiting the visiting team to two shots in the first half. With her nine shots in this game, senior Mallory Illsley increased her season total to 19. Senior Brigid St. Leger got her third start of the season and recorded her third career victory.
“We’ve been working real hard the last couple of days and we have been stressing effort,” said Canisius head coach Jim Wendling. “I thought we had a much better effort tonight and it resulted in a win. A win like this is rewarding and hopefully we will be able to keep the momentum going as we prepare to take on St. Bonaventure.”
The Griffs will play next against long-time rival St. Bonaventure on Sun. Aug. 31, with the game set to begin at 1 p.m in Olean, N.Y.
