Griffs Remain in Sixth Place at MAAC Championships

The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to the Burt Flickinger Center Natatorium for day two of the 2012 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday. At the end of the day, the Golden Griffin women remain in sixth place with 222.50 points and the men remain in the top three at third with 410 points. The Griff women are only a half-point out of fifth place, while the men are nine points away from second.

As reigning champion in the 1000 freestyle, junior Shawn Parkhurst defended his title with a first-place finish of 9:12.43, making a sweep of the records by setting the school, pool, and MAAC record. The junior broke his own school record by nearly eight seconds.

Entering as the top seed in the 100 backstroke after the morning preliminaries, senior Steve Pochatko lived up to expectations by capturing his first MAAC champion title. Finishing fifth last season, the senior broke his previous school record in his first-place performance, securing a time of 50.17.

For the second day in a row, the Canisius women broke a program record to open the evening session. The 200-medley relay team of sophomore Maggie DeMarco, Anna Schena, and Kelli Graber, and freshman Megan Sullivan placed eighth, setting the school record.

The Golden Griffin men picked up where they left off last night, breaking the program record in the 200 medley relay. The team of senior Steve Pochatko, junior Tyler Carver and Matt Moessinger, and freshman Nick Sereday secured a time of 1:33.06.

The Golden Griffin men dominated the 1000 freestyle race. Along with Parkhurst's record-breaking first-place finish, junior Corey Petrie improved his season best close to 50 seconds for a time of 9:39.70 to place fourth overall.

In the first individual race of the evening, freshman Marissa Oakey crushed her own school record in the 1000 freestyle to place second overall. The freshman bested her previous record by over 11 seconds, posting a time of 10:15.41.

In her second race of the evening, Schena placed fourth (10:20.99) in the 1000 freestyle to better her season-best going into the conference championships over 27 seconds.

With one event separating her last race, Schena returned to the water to compete in the 100 butterfly. The sophomore came within six-hundredths of her school record with a time of 58.31 to place sixth in the A-final.

The school records continued to fall, as Moessinger broke his own school record in his fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 50.99.

Taking first in the B-final of the 200 freestyle was sophomore Adam Swift, who came within three-tenths of the school record with a time of 1:44.55.

Competing in his first conference championship, freshman Eddie Quarantillo placed third in the A-final of the 3-meter board with a score of 264.70. Also, competing in the A-final, sophomores Jake and Joel Kowalski finished sixth and eighth, respectively.

For the second day in the row, the Griff women ended their day with a record-breaking relay performance. The 800-freestyle relay team of junior Annelise Gunn-Taylor, Powalski, sophomore Leah Villari, and Oakey set the school record with a time of 7:49.25 for a fifth-place finish.

Closing out the night for the Golden Griffins was the men's 800-freestyle relay team of Petrie, freshman Sean Wurster, Moessinger, and Parkhurst. The relay team set the school record in its second-place finish with a time of 6:51.71.

The Golden Griffins close out the 2011-12 season when they conclude the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Burt Flickinger Center on Feb. 18 with the opening session slated to start at 10 a.m.
