The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams welcome Little Three rival St. Bonaventure to the Koessler Athletic Center on Friday afternoon, as the Golden Griffins host the Bonnies in their home opener.
In last year's dual, the Bonnies completed a sweep of both the Golden Griffin men and women at the Reilly Center in Olean, N.Y. The SBU men captured a 153-89 victory over the Griffs, while the women secured a 141-101 decision.
At last year's dual at the Reilly Center, sophomore Marissa Oakey captured a pair of first-place finishes in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle races with senior Shawn Parkhurst placing first in the 100-yard backstroke.
In recent action, the Golden Griffins opened their dual schedules at MAAC opponent Marist, being swept in both duals at the McCann Natatorium on Oct. 20. In their second dual in program history, the Red Fox men defeated the Griffs by the score of 171-121 and the reigning women's MAAC champion Marist captured a 182-113 victory over the visiting Griffs.
For the Golden Griffin women, it was a pair of freshmen leading the way as Clare Battaglia and Alex Doody combined for three first-place finishes. For the second straight race, Battaglia won the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.30), while also winning her first 200-backstroke (2:09.35) race of her career. Doody walked away with her first collegiate win in an event, as she captured first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.87).
For the men, senior Tyler Carver (1:00.98) and sophomore Sam Hansen (1:01.88) placed first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke, respectively. Hansen would win the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.65) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:06.14). Sophomore Sean Wurster locked up a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.75.
