Griffs Complete Sweep of Geneseo on Senior Day

The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept SUNY Geneseo on Senior Day in the home finale at the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffin men and women each defeated the Knights by identical scores of 136-97. As part of the Senior Day celebration, the Griffs honored seven combined seniors.

Prior to the meet, the Golden Griffins honored the careers of seniors Alexa Gigliotti and Annelise Gunn-Taylor from the women's team. The men's team recognized five seniors compete in their final home dual, including Shawn Parkhurst, Tyler Carver, Mike Disco, Matt Moessinger, and  Robby Novak.

The Golden Griffin men and women opened the day with victories in each of their 400-medley relay events. The team of freshman Clare Battaglia, sophomore Erika Toszer, junior Anna Schena, and Gunn-Taylor finished first with a time of 4:07.51.

For the men, the Golden Griffins swept the top two spots in the 400-yard medley relay team. Coming in first with a time of 3:36.44 was the team of freshman Spencer Bray, sophomores Sean Stegemoller and Nick Sereday, and Carver. The team sophomores Tyler Evans and Shane Donovan, junior Andrew Edbauer, and freshman Jake Kohler followed behind for second in 3:43.13.

Following the 400-yard medley relay races, sophomore Marissa Oakey captured first place in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:52.98 to take the first individual race of the afternoon for the women.

The Golden Griffin men wasted no time with a sweep in the 1000-yard freestyle. Senior Shawn Parkhurst secured the top spot in 9:49.74 with a season-best performance followed by Novak in second (10:19.15) and junior Corey Petrie in third (10:21.87). Parkhurst also placed first (1:53.50) in the 200-yard butterfly, coasting into first with a 10-second lead.

The Griff men kept their streak of sweeps in tack, taking the top-three spots in the 200-yard freestyle. Sophomore Sean Wurster and Bray battled for top honors with Wurster finishing first (1:46.02) and Bray in second (1:46.73). Junior Adam Swift rounded out the Griffs' sweep in third, recording a time of 1:49.87.

In the men's events, Wurster finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.02) and Sophomore Sam Hansen won two events, as he posted top times in the 200-yard IM (2:00.56) and 200-yard breaststroke. Disco went onto finish second in the 100-yard freestyle and third in the 50-yard freestyle. The Griffs' secured another sweep in the 200-yard backstroke, as Bray, Evans, and Edbauer took the top spots, respectively.

In diving, sophomore Eddie Quarantillo placed first in the 1-meter event with a season-best score of 271.43. Junior Joel Kowalski followed in second, tallying a score of 242.70. In the 3-meter event, Kowalski finished second (248.25) followed by Quarantillo in third (238.20).

For the women, freshman Alex Doody claimed first-place finishes in the 200-yard IM (2:13.42). In both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races, junior Kelli Graber and sophomore Erika Toszer finished first and second, respectively. Battaglia finished first in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.36) and 200-yard backstroke (2:12.59).

The diving duo of freshman Audrey Mulhisen and sophomore Taylor Epstein dominated the Griffs' record board. In the 3-meter event, Mulhisen set the pool record with a first-place score of 257.55. Both Mulhisen and Epstein broke the program record in the 1-meter event with Epstein topping off her total in her final dive to tally a score of 243.97. Gigliotti also had a career day, setting a season best in the 1-meter and career best in the 3-meter.

The Blue and Gold will return to competition on January 12 at Gannon with the dual scheduled at 11 a.m.
