Four home meets highlight the 2013-14 Canisius College swimming and diving schedule, released by head coach Scott Vanderzell on Thursday.
The Golden Griffins will open their campaign against Marist Oct. 18. That meet will take place at the Burt Flickenger Center on the campus of Erie Community College, which will also play host to the MAAC Championships Feb. 13-15.
“ECC gives us a great venue to compete,” Vanderzell said. “Hosting the conference championship with Niagara helps provide a great venue for championship swimming.”
After hosting the season opener, Canisius will hit the road for its next five meets. The Griffs will head to the University of Rochester Invite (Oct. 25-26), Geneseo (Oct. 23), St. Bonaventure (Nov. 16), Colgate (Nov. 23) and Cleveland State (Dec. 3).
“We always try to accomplish getting comfortable and being very successful in the early season,” Vanderzell said. “Being on the road at the beginning of the season helps bring us together."
Following the five-meet road trip, the Griffs will host three meets at Koessler Athletic Center prior to the MAAC championships. Fredonia (Dec. 14) and Gannon (Jan. 11) will visit Canisius before the Blue and Gold closes the regular season against long-time rival Niagara on Jan. 19.
The Canisius men's swimming and diving team placed third at the 2013 MAAC Swimming and Diving championships while the women's squad took fourth-place at the conference's championship event. For the men's program, it marked the second-straight year where the team finished third in the league, while the women's fourth-place finish and 391 total points were both program records.
