The Canisius men’s soccer team scored the first goal but Iona responded with three unanswered goals to defeat the Golden Griffins 3-1 at the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday night.

"Just like the end of last season, we have been able to generate chances but aren't able to finish them," Canisius coach Dermot McGrane said. "We limited Iona to just a few chances and that should be enough to defeat a team. I give credit to Iona for taking advantage of those chances, but we have to find a way to finish our own scoring opportunities."

The Griffs controlled play for the opening 30 minutes of the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. Junior Asani Samuels went up the left side and fired a shot at the Iona net. Julian Petrello made the initial save, but the rebound went in front of the goal where junior Denver Spearman gathered the rebound and scored his third goal of the season to give the Griffs the lead.

Iona (9-6-2, 5-3-1 MAAC) then scored two goals in less than five minutes late in the first half. Ignacio Maganto drew a foul just outside the penalty area, and Franklin Castellanos shot the free kick into the upper-left corner to even the score in the 38th minute. Just four minutes later, Samuel Adjei sent a cross from the right side in front of the Canisius net, where a Golden Griffin defender attempted to clear the cross but shot it into his own net and put Iona up 2-1. The Gaels put the game away in the 85th minute when Castellanos gathered the ball in the left side of the box. He made a quick move to the right and then fired a shot into the right side to put Iona up 3-1.

Peterello (9-6-2) made six saves to earn the win while John Hollinger (1-2-0) took the loss for the Griffs.

Canisius returns to the field on Wednesday, at Rider University. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
