Following a one-week layoff, the Canisius College swimming and diving team will return to the pool on Saturday, to square off with Big Four rival St. Bonaventure.

“In the time that we’ve had off, we’ve really had an opportunity to get in a train and to get our volume up,” said head coach Scott Vanderzell. “Instead of trying to be race ready all the time we were able to get our conditioning going.”

Both the Canisius men and women come into the meet 4-1 in dual meets this season (the University of Rochester Invite was scored as duals between the competing programs). The Griffs fell in both the men and women’s meets when the met the Bonnies in Oct. of last season.

“They’re a good squad and they give us an opportunity to race against high-level kids,” Vanderzell said. “That’s somethin we need throughout our season to continue to improve.”

On the men’s side, the Griffs have gotten solid performances from junior diver Eddie Quarantillo, who has set school-records in both the 1- and 3-meter dives so far this year. Quarantillo has also already qualified for NCAA Zone A Regionals on both boards, becoming the first diver in program history to do so. Quarantillo earned diver of the week honors after his performance at Geneseo.

The Griffs will also rely on sophomore Spencer Bray has been one of the top-swimmers for Canisius thus far. Bray earned MAAC Swimmer of the week honors following his performance at the University of Rochester Invite.

On the women’s side, the Griffs have two reigning MAAC Performers of the Week following their performances at Geneseo. Sophomore Clare Battaglia and junior Taylor Epstein earned MAAC Swimmer and Diver of the week respectively after strong performances in their last meet.

The Griffs will look to continue their run of four-consecutive dual meet victories on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Olean, N.Y.
