After spending the spring season on the road, the Canisius College rowing team will host the second-annual Black Rock Cup on Saturday, April 20, at the Frank Lloyd Wright's Fontana Boathouse along the Black Rock Canal. The event will feature four races, including the women's Varsity Four race, men's Varsity Eight race, women's Second Varsity Eight race, and women's Varsity Eight race.

Joining the Griffs for the second consecutive year at the home race will be D'Youville College. At last year's inaugural Black Rock Cup, the Griffs cruised to a first-place finish to capture the team title over D'Youville. The Griffs swept the Spartans in both the Varsity Four race and the Varsity Eight race.

The new arrival to the field at the Black Rock Cup is Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) affiliate Robert Morris. For the second straight week, the Griffs and Robert Morris will see each other after both competed at the Knecht Cup on April 13-14 in Camden, N.J.

To open the day, the Griffs will face D'Youville and Robert Morris in the Varsity Four race at 10:15 a.m. The next race of the morning will include a pair of club teams in the men's Varsity Eight race, as the Griffs face crosstown opponent the University at Buffalo. The final two competitions will feature the Griffs and Robert Morris in head-to-head races, including the Varsity Eight race for the Black Rock Cup.

For the second year, the Griffs will host the Black Rock Cup at the Frank Lloyd Wright's Fontana Boathouse. The Griffs have called the Frank Lloyd Wright's Fontana Boathouse their home since the fall 2011 season. A $6.1 million facility, the boathouse is a modern marvel nestled on the shores of the Black Rock Canal. Originally designed by world-renown architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905, it would take over a century before the boathouse found its home destination. After years of fundraising and negotations, Wright's only boathouse design was constructed in September 2007.

The Griffs' Varsity Eight enters the Black Rock Cup after collecting its third MAAC weekly honor this season after placing fourth in their respective heat at the Knecht Cup on April 13 along the Cooper River. The Varsity Eight remains undefeated against MAAC opponents this season through three spring races.

With a time of 6:59.70, the Griffs posted the top time among the four MAAC schools competing in the Varsity Eight race at the Knecht Cup. In the fourth heat of the Varsity Eight race, conference-affiliate Robert Morris finished sixth with a time of 7:36.85. The sixth heat featured a pair of MAAC opponents going head-to-head, as Fairfield placed fifth (7:07.34) followed by Marist in sixth (7:13.36).
