Junior Jesse Kelso (East Aurora, N.Y.) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team on Friday afternoon. Kelso is the only player from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to receive the honor in 2013.
A biology major with a 3.55 grade point average, Kelso ranks second on the team with a .336 batting average, .469 on-base percentage and .536 slugging percentage. Kelso leads the team with 36 runs scored, 26 walks and four triples. The 5-foot-10 outfielder also ranks second on the team with 30 RBI, eight doubles, 11 hit by pitch and 11 stolen bases.
Kelso is one of four outfielders in District 1 to be named to the First Team and now advances to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America voting. The Canisius baseball program has had four Academic All-Americans in the last three years – Drew Pettit in 2011 and 2012, Sean Jamieson in 2011 and Ian Choy in 2010.
Canisius (32-12, 9-6 MAAC) plays its final MAAC regular-season road series this weekend with a three-game series at Siena. First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader is set for noon.
