A day after breaking a school record in the 1-meter dive which had previously stood for 18 years, junior diver Eddie Quarantillo set to pace for the Canisius College swimming and diving team at day two of the University of Rochester Invitational on Saturday.

Quarantillo took first place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 266.95, with Griffs’ freshman Adam Bonk finishing just a point behind in second place, helping the Canisius men top Brandeis, NYU and Rochester in dual meets on Saturday.

The Canisius women also swept the schools behind a pair of record breakers. Freshman Hannah Graesser breaking her own school-record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.09. Graesser also broke the school-record in the 100-yard freestyle just one event later with a time of 53.69.

Junior diver Taylor Epstein set the school’s 1-meter dive record with a score of 234.25.

A strong finish is what catapulted the Griffs to the top of the leaderboard, as a Canisius swimmer took first in 13 of the final 20 events at the meet.

Freshman Marissa Watroba started the run with a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. Watroba completed the event in 1:09.37. Fellow freshman Matt Tanchick took first for the men in the same event, finishing in 58.94. Freshman Wyatt Sintay, finished just behind Tanchick in second place with a time of 1:00.41.

Watroba would later win the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:30.57.

In the 200-yard backstroke sophomore Clare Battaglia completed the event in 2:12.66, which was good for another Griffs’ first place finish. Battaglia also broke the pool record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.87.

Battaglia's swim was one of three University of Rochester pool records that were broken by the Griffs on Saturday. A pair of Canisius relay teams broke pool records as well, with sophomore Alex Doody, Battaglia, senior Kelli Graber, and Graesser breaking the University of Rochester's 200-free relay time. Canisius finished the event with a time of 1:38.62. The Griffs used a time of 3:36.42 to break the 400-yard freestyle relay time as well, with junior Marissa Oakey, Battaglia, Graber and Graesser on that team.

Sophomore Spencer Bray took the top spot in the 200-yard backstroke for the men in 1:56.60.

Bray would also take the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle.

In the women’s 500-yard freestyle, the Griffs took both first and second, with the swimmers separated by less than 0.2 seconds. Doody managed to out-touch Oakey for the top-spot, finishing in 5:15.25.

Sintay took the first of his two victories in the 200-yard breaststroke, Sintay also finished first in the 200-yard IM.

The Griffs will return to the pool next Saturday, Nov. 2 when they head to SUNY Geneseo. That meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
