QUICK HITTERS

  • The Canisius women’s basketball team hits the road for two games in the state of New Jersey this weekend, starting with Friday’s game at Monmouth University.
  • Canisius and Monmouth are meeting for the first time in program history.
  • Monmouth, along with Quinnipiac, is one of two new members in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season. The Griffs played Quinnipiac on Dec. 21, in the Koessler Athletic Center.
  • Canisius snapped a five-game losing streak with a 48-47 win over Saint Peter’s on Sunday. The Griffs improved to 3-0 this season in games decided by five points or fewer.
  • The 2013-14 season is the 25th year that the Golden Griffins have played in the MAAC.
  • Senior Jamie Ruttle was named to the preseason All-MAAC Third Team. It is the third time in Ruttle’s career that she has been selected to a preseason All-MAAC Team.
  • Canisius was picked to finish sixth of 11 teams in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. 

NOTING THE GRIFFS

  • As of Jan. 8, Canisius is 11th in the country in assisted basket percentage (68.5), which is also the highest percentage in the MAAC.
  • Canisius has shot 40 percent or better in seven games this season. The Griffs shot 40 percent or better five times in 31 games during the entire 2012-13 season.
  • In the Dec. 29 game at Manhattan, senior Jamie Ruttle became the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 career points. Ruttle has scored in double figures a team-best 10 times this season and 53 times in her career.
  • Senior Jen Morabito Morabito ranks sixth in program history in career 3-pointers (182) and is second in 3-point field goal percentage (37.2). Senior Jen Lennox is third in the program’s Division I history with 94 blocks.
  • Junior Kayla Hoohuli is one of two players in the MAAC to make a 3-pointer in 13 or more games this season. 

MONMOUTH SCOUT

  • Monmouth enters Friday’s game with a 2-13 overall record and 1-3 in the MAAC.
  • The Hawks picked up their first MAAC win in a 62-57 overtime victory over Fairfield on Jan. 3, when Monmouth had a season-low nine turnovers.
  • Chevannah Paalvast leads the team with a 14.6 points per game average, which ranks sixth in the MAAC. Paalvast also leads the team in rebounding (5.5), assists (31), blocks (15) and steals (21).
  • Sophomore guard Jasmine Walker posted her first career double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) in Sunday’s game against Rider. Sophomore guard Kasey Chambers scored a career-high 14 points in that game.
  • The Hawks are 11th in the MAAC in 3-point field goal percentage (26.8) and 3-pointers made per game (3.5) while allowing their opponents to shoot a league-best 35.7 percent from behind the arc.
  • Monmouth has a 30.4 offensive rebounding percentage and 65.0 defensive rebounding percentage. The Hawks turn the ball over on 26.1 percent of their possessions, which ranks 11th in the MAAC.
  • Jenny Palmateer is in her third season as head coach at Monmouth. The 1993 graduate of North Carolina State University led the Hawks to an appearance in the 2012 NEC Championship Game during her first season.

GOING TO WORK IN THE PAINT

  • Canisius has outscored its opponents in the paint in each of the last seven games.
  • In the first seven games of the season, Canisius was outscored 31.7 to 21.4 in the paint.
  • In the last five games, Canisius has outscored its opponents 24.6 to 17.1 in the paint, including 54-18 in the two games last weekend.
