The Canisius men’s basketball team, winners of two straight and eight of the last 11 games, has moved into the CollegeInsider.com Men’s Mid-Major Top-25 poll this week. The Golden Griffins are ranked No. 22 in the poll, which is voted on by a panel of coaches from 22 Division I conferences.
The Griffs moved into the top-25 poll after earning 71 votes. Canisius joins MAAC-rival Manhattan in the poll, making the MAAC one of seven leagues to have multiple schools listed in the top-25. Canisius has played and defeated one team in the poll. The Griffs beat No. 20 Georgia State 79-71 back on Nov. 25 in the NIT Season Tip Off on a neutral court in Elon, N.C.
The CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll is now in its 15th season. The poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, MAAC, Mid-American, MEAC, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, SWAC, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast, the WAC and Division I Independents.Canisius is 14-7 overall and 8-2 in MAAC play after beating Niagara and Marist at home last week. The 8-2 start in league play has the Griffs tied atop the MAAC standings with Iona, and it marks the program’s best 10-game MAAC start since 1996-97. The Griffs return to action Thursday, Jan. 30, when the Blue and Gold plays at Quinnipiac. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on SNY.
