The Canisius College women’s soccer team will open the 2013 season on Aug. 23, when it travels to Cleveland State, head coach Jim Wendling announced on Tuesday.
The Golden Griffins have nine non-conference contests scheduled, five of which will take place at home. Youngstown State (Aug. 25), St. Bonaventure (Aug. 28), Detroit (Sept. 6), Albany (Sept. 13) and Akron (Sept. 15) will visit Demske Sports Complex this season.
In addition to Cleveland State, the Griffs will also make a non-conference road trip to Charleston, S.C., to take on Charleston Southern (Aug. 30) and The Citadel (Sept. 1). Canisius will also visit Northern Kentucky on Sept. 8 to close out its road non-conference slate.
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play is scheduled to begin on Sept. 21 when Canisius travels to Iona. The Griffs then return home for a contest against Rider (Sept. 25), before their three-game road trip – the longest of the season. The trip is kicked off by the first contest with new MAAC member Monmouth (Sept. 28), followed by the Oct. 2 matchup with long-time rival Niagara.
Canisius will then play four of its last five contests at home and close out the regular season on Oct. 26 against Saint Peter’s.
The 2013 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship will be held from Oct. 31 through Nov. 4 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. All 11 MAAC schools will travel to Florida to take part in the event, with the conference champion earning the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament field.
Canisius returns 12 players who started more than 10 games and 18 letterwinners from last year's team, highlighted by senior Brianna Smith who earned All-MAAC First Team honors in 2012.
