The Canisius College rowing team concluded its regular season on Friday, when the team played host to Mercyhurst.
After both the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four fell to the Lakers, the Second Varsity Eight rebounded and cruised to a 22-second victory to close out the event.
The Second Varsity Eight, which was comprised of freshmen Amber Giambone, Chanel Davis, Mikaela Braun and Erin Grim, sophomores Megan Walsh, Molly Murphy and Ashley Tylenda, junior Liz Reinwald and sophomore coxswain Hannah Blum completed the course in 8:55.62.
The Varsity Fours kicked off the Griffs’ lone home event of the 2014 season by finishing in 10:39.13. The crew consisted of freshman Lauren Bielby and sophomores Nicole Littlejohn, Tiffany Velado and Jordan Szustak, as well as freshman coxswain Kaitlyn Taylor.
Mercyhurst took the race with a time of 10:04.11.
In the Varsity Eight race, the Griffs fell to the lakers by just over six seconds, as Mercyhurst took the win with a time of 7:58.05. The Canisius boat was made up of freshman Liz DelBarba, sophomores Corrine Kickel, Julia Sciandra and Nora Kennon, seniors Meghan Martin, Liz McKinney, Bridget Laszewski and Allison Braun, and sophomore coxswain Jordan Bamrick.
The crews were racing into a 12 mph cross-headwind on the afternoon.
Canisius will now return to the site of last week’s Knecht Cup – Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. -- to vie for its first MAAC Championship in the young program’s history. Action will commence at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 26.
