Canisius College head rowing coach Joel Furtek has announced that the women's varsity and men's club programs will hold an informational meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m., in the Griffin Team Meeting Room in the Koessler Athletic Center. Any full-time students that are interested in becoming a member of either rowing team at Canisius are encouraged to attend. No previous rowing experience is necessary.

"We've had a great start to the Fall on the water, and now we're ready to reach out to everyone on campus and offer them this amazing experience -- to be a Golden Griff representing Canisius College in races across the country," said Furtek. "At least one student on campus will find herself sitting in a Griffs racing shell at the MAAC Championship this April, and if she races right, at the NCAA Championship on the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Course!"

If you plan on attending the meeting, current team members will meet interested students at the doors of the on-campus dorms to walk over to the Koessler Athletic Center. Otherwise, please meet at the Griffin Team Meeting Room.

The meeting will last approximately 45 minutes and is open to men and women full-time students interested in joining the Canisius rowing programs.

"Rowing is still a sport that welcomes crossover athletes from other sports, or those with no prior athletic experience at all," said Furtek. "Not everyone can row, but we are always excited to find those who were 'born to row' but have not yet discovered our sport.  More than half of the women on the USA gold-medal winning Olympic rowing team started rowing in college!"

For more information on the meeting or the Canisius rowing program, please contact coach Furtek or assistant coach Stephanie Parrish at (716) 888-7609.
