The Canisius College softball team dropped a pair of contests to the Ohio Bobcats at the Ohio Softball Field on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins fell to the host Bobcats, 4-0, in the opening contest before falling short in a late rally in game two, 7-6. The Griffs slide to 11-8 with the Bobcats improving to 15-10 on the season.
Trailing by the score of 7-1 heading into the top of the sixth in game two, the Griffs tallied four runs with two outs to cut into the Bobcats’ lead. Freshman Bethany Demarco started the Griffs’ offensive attack with a two-run shot over the left-field wall. With runners in scoring position, sophomore Michelle Delprince found a gap in center field on a base-clearing two-RBI double to move the Griffs within a pair of runs, 7-5.
Facing a pair of outs to open the top of the seventh, junior Valorie Nappo buried the ball deep into right field to advance to second on the throw, which allowed sophomore Marissa Miller to score. The Griffs’ hope of a comeback ended with a ground out to short, allowing the Bobcats to hold on for a 7-6 victory.
Junior Jen Consaul stymied the Bobcats’ offense in the final 1.2 innings, allowing no hits and striking out one batter in relief work. Sophomore Corrine Schaus picked up the loss in 4.1 innings.
In game two, Miller went 1-for-1 with a pair of runs scored. Freshmen Tori Nappo (2-for-4 and RBI) and Alexis Roman (2-for-3 and run scored) added to the Griffs’ offense.
In the opening contest of the doubleheader, the Bobcats held the Griffs scoreless on six hits. The Bobcats took an early two-run lead in the opening frame on an RBI-double followed by an RBI-single.
The Bobcats added single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, the Bobcats increased their lead to 3-0 on a force out at second with a runner at third following a successful bunt.
The Bobcats’ relied on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth by Lauren Gellerman to secure a 4-0 lead over the Griffs. Gellerman finished the day hitting 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs.
Consaul recorded the loss in 6.0 innings, compiling five strikeouts in game one. The senior finished the day with six strikeouts in 7.2 innings of action.
Demarco went 2-for-3 to lead the Griffs in the opening contest. The freshman went a combined 3-for-6 on the day with a run scored and an RBI.
The Blue and Gold will return Western New York for a meeting with Buffalo on Wednesday, March 24, at 4 p.m.
